The Hon. Ed Lumley and Ron Joyce at the Ed Lumley Centre for Engineering, University of Windsor (2016)

It is with deep sadness that the Board of The Joyce Family Foundation shares the news of the passing of The Honourable Ed Lumley. Board Chair since 2019 and esteemed trustee since 2010, Ed was a tireless champion for vulnerable children and youth across Canada. His strength of character, driven by genuine compassion for others and an earnest concern for the public good, had an impact on all who knew him.

Based on a long-standing friendship with Ron Joyce, co-founder of Tim Hortons, Ed was appointed his successor on the foundation board. During his tenure, Ed oversaw the expanding impact of the foundation and together with the Board of Trustees extended its reach to numerous youth-serving charitable organizations throughout the country. Ed had a special interest in access to opportunities for at-risk youth, particularly in education. His empathy for young people was deeply rooted in his own humble beginnings and his enduring belief in the power of post-secondary education.

Born in Windsor, Ontario, in 1939, Ed led a remarkable life of service and achievement even beyond his charitable work. He began his career in municipal politics as Mayor of Cornwall before serving as a federal Member of Parliament and Cabinet Minister in several key portfolios. His influence extended into the corporate world, where he held leadership roles on the boards of major Canadian companies, and into academia, where he served as Chancellor of the University of Windsor. He was invested as a Member of the Order of Canada in 2014 for his outstanding business acumen and concern for the public good.

Whether in politics, business, education or philanthropy, Ed brought passion and a personal sense of responsibility into every role. He was a devoted family man, a principled leader, and defender of the less fortunate. His legacy of service and his commitment to creating a better future for others will no doubt continue to inspire those who strive to make meaningful contributions to society.

The Board and staff of The Joyce Family Foundation express our deepest condolences to Ed’s wife Pat, and the entire Lumley family.
